AI News: OpenAI Smartphone?
Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that OpenAI may be developing an AI-native smartphone in partnership with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare, with mass production potentially beginning in 2028. Rather than competing on manufacturing alone, OpenAI’s advantage would come from its AI models, software ecosystem, and consumer platform.
The proposed device could fundamentally redefine the smartphone experience by shifting away from app-based interactions toward AI agents that complete tasks on the user’s behalf. According to Kuo, achieving this vision would require deep integration between hardware, operating systems, and AI systems, allowing the device to continuously understand user context through sensors, memory, behavior patterns, and real-time data.
