Latest Blog: Unified Payroll vs. Integrated Payroll

Unified vs Integrated payroll

Every People and Finance team knows: a new-state hire entered the day after the payroll cutoff, a short paycheck the employee catches before you do, and a close where two systems disagree about what was actually paid. On paper, everything is integrated. The HRIS pushes to payroll and payroll pushes to the ledger. Most months it holds. The real question is whether your payroll is unified or only integrated. Here's the test that tells the difference:

  1. Enter one change. Does it appear everywhere instantly, or "sync over" on a schedule?
  2. Where does your source of truth live? One answer, or "depends which screen you're on"?
  3. What breaks at month-end? Proving two systems agree, or numbers that are already the same?
  4. How many logins does one payroll cycle take? One environment, or five that hand off to each other?
  5. Test a new country or worker type. Does it extend the record you have, or stand up a new system with a new failure point?

Integrated payroll is separate systems kept in agreement by data syncs, so every worker and payment lives in more than one place, and the seams between them are where timing errors, reconciliation, and compliance gaps appear.

Unified payroll is one system with one shared record that HR, payroll, and finance read and write to directly, so there's no copy to drift. Niural is built this way, and its execution layer, EMMA, validates each run before it processes, catching a missing tax setup or a misclassification while it's still fixable. It isn't more connectors. It's one source of truth.
